Seeds of Sustenance, a gardening initiative in Guatemala, works to improve food security, education, and community resilience. By creating and supporting gardens at the orphanage, school, and local communities, we provide lasting systems people can manage and sustain.
Families often face seasonal food shortages, and children’s health and learning can suffer. Through gardens and training, we help communities move from dependence to self-reliance and ensure a steady supply of nutritious food.
Garden construction & infrastructure: Raised beds, compost, irrigation, soil prep, and pest protection.
Training & capacity building: Workshops for community members, school staff, and caregivers.
Community extension: Support for home and communal gardens, seed kits, and follow-up.
Ongoing support & monitoring: Check-ins, refresher training, and yield tracking.
Nutrition & education integration: Students learn garden science and healthy eating; surplus supports meals and sharing.
Your support provides tools, seeds, soil amendments, irrigation components, and training. Every gift plants a seed of lasting change in Guatemala.
First Harvest Shared Across the Community This month, we celebrated our very first harvest! Students and caregivers gathered to pick fresh vegetables from the school and orphanage gardens, and together they prepared a meal that was enjoyed by everyone. For many children, it was the first time they tasted food they had helped plant and grow themselves — and the pride on their faces said it all. Beyond the orphanage and school, families in the community have also begun sharing their first small harvests with neighbors. This spirit of generosity is at the heart of our vision. Not only are we seeing improved nutrition, but also stronger connections between families who are working side by side to grow food and hope for the future.
First Gardens Planted at the Orphanage and School We’re excited to share that the very first gardens at both the orphanage and the school are officially planted! Raised beds have been built, the soil has been enriched with compost, and rows of vegetables — including tomatoes, peppers, beans, and leafy greens — are already beginning to sprout. Children and caregivers joined in the planting, making the process not only productive but also an opportunity to learn together. Teachers have begun weaving the garden into their lessons, giving students hands-on science experiences and reinforcing the importance of healthy eating. Already, the excitement among the children is contagious. They can’t wait to watch their plants grow and taste the first harvest.
Community Training Workshops Launched After the initial success of the orphanage and school gardens, we expanded into the surrounding community with our first round of training workshops. Families gathered to learn practical gardening skills such as crop rotation, composting, and natural pest management. Each participant received a starter seed kit, and many have already begun planting in their own yards. The workshops have created a wonderful sense of momentum. Parents shared stories of their children coming home from school eager to help water or check on the plants. Several families who had previously depended on purchasing most of their food are now excited to grow part of their meals right outside their doors.
